The Current: Men In Tights, Recent Favorite Finds & a Grilled Cheese Revelation
The best of the past two weeks
I spent the majority of the past two weeks nursing a wicked chest cold and sinus infection that had more than overstayed its welcome, but in the midst of that hell I managed to pull myself together to attend the Ballet West Spring Soirée (Rent the Runway to the rescue!). I’m so glad I did because the night was a literal dream come true.
I’ve been ballet obsessed for as long as I can remember. I took lessons when I was younger with my cousins, Lyndsay and Rebecca, and we even got on pointe at one point. But I ultimately quit ballet for good once puberty hit. Sadly, wearing a leotard and being self-conscious about your changing body was not a great combo.
My grammy and mom first took me to Ballet West’s “The Nutcracker” as a young child, and it was love at first sight. I remember dancing in the aisles during intermission and dreaming of being Clara one day. I did audition for “The Nutcracker” some years later, but tragically I didn’t make the cut. Still, my love for Ballet West endured. We had season tickets for years and years until my grammy passed away, and then my mom and I carried on the torch. I’ll never forget during one of the final performances my mom and I saw with my grammy, she leaned over and whispered loud enough for everyone around us to hear, “Do you think they stuff their tights?” (referencing the seemingly well-endowed male dancers). Mortifying, but an astute observation, if you ask me.
These days, I have season tickets to Ballet West with friends, but my mom and I still go to “The Nutcracker” every year (my husband even joins us because he loves it too), and I can’t wait to bring my own daughter along when she’s old enough.
Suffice to say, my idea of heaven was attending the Ballet West gala and sitting ON STAGE at Capitol Theatre where we ate dinner in the most stunning setting—thanks to the talents of my incredible friend Mara Mazdzer and her team at Fuse Weddings & Events—and were treated to special performances by Ballet West dancers. I was seated next to former Ballet West principal dancer Katherine Lawrence, who I watched dance on stage for many years, and it was so fun to chat with her. The whole evening was truly a delight and I felt so lucky to be there.
Ballet West recently announced its 2025–2026 season, and it’s going to be a good one! Learn more about upcoming performances and purchase tickets here.

April 12 was National Grilled Cheese Day, and while I love a gooey cheddar rendition as much as the next gal (and toddler), I discovered the best new combo for an elevated grilled cheese: fresh sourdough, melted brie, Davina Sour Cherry Spread, and a whole lot of butter. The combination is so unexpected but so good. A little sweet, a little salty, and a lot delicious.
