I’ve never been much of an athlete—I’d rather be sitting in the bleachers sipping a solo cup than out on the field breaking a sweat. I hated gym class and I’ve always found running to be a form of pure torture. When it comes to marathons, the only one I’ve ever come close to completing is a read-a-thon (which is an Olympic sport I’d excel at).
Growing up, I had a decent backhand in tennis and I dabbled in dance, but I’ve never been big on group sports or competition. Which is probably why now as an adult my favorite forms of exercise are mellow, solo pursuits like Pilates and yoga. But, truth be told, I’ve always been in awe of athletes. In high school, I marveled at the kids I knew who were skilled soccer players, fearless freestyle skiers, and dedicated ballet dancers. Still today, some of the humans I admire the most are professional athletes, from tennis pros to NBA stars.
Despite my own lack of athletic ability, I’ve always loved watching the Olympics. There was even a time when I was a little girl that I dreamed of winning Olympic gold. I’d don a shiny red leotard and perform gymnastics routines down the hallway of our home, which essentially consisted of a series of somersaults and leg stretches, but I nailed the finishing pose.

The Paris Olympics start today, and I’m excited to watch the summer games—particularly the opening ceremony on the River Seine and the equestrian events at Versailles. And while I may never win any medals for my sportsmanship, I can at least dress the part. Ahead, check out 22 sporty ensembles for every activity, from lunges to lounging.
